Cookies, Cookies, Cookies…

Who doesn’t love Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies? Homemade cookies are always a hit in any household. Growing up, there was nothing better than coming home from school to a plate of warm cookies on the table—it didn’t matter what kind they were!

“Cookies are made of butter and love.”

– Norwegian Proverb

I’ve been baking a lot of sourdough bread recently, The Hungry Beast: My Sourdough Journey of Love, Learning, and Loaves, and it’s made me experiment with different types of flour. We used to just have all-purpose flour in the house, but now I keep a variety—pizza flour, bread flour, all-purpose flour, and pastry flour. One day, I decided to try using bread flour in my chocolate chip cookies, and the results were amazing! The bread flour gave the cookies a chewier texture, making them soft on the inside with just the right amount of crispiness on the edges. They were a huge hit in our house, and now it’s my go-to flour for cookies!

Benefits of Bread Flour

For cookies, bread flour can make a world of difference, adding a wonderful chewiness while maintaining a tender texture. I found that using bread flour really enhanced the chewiness in my chocolate chip cookies without sacrificing the softness and tenderness that make them irresistible.

So what is bread flour? Bread flour is higher in protein (12-14%) compared to all-purpose flour (10-12%), which contributes to more gluten development. This is why bread flour is typically used in bread, rolls, and pizza dough to create that chewy, elastic texture. The increased gluten allows dough to rise effectively and maintain its structure, resulting in a denser, chewier crumb.

When used in cookies, bread flour provides that same chewiness, but without losing the soft texture we all crave in chocolate chip cookies. It truly elevates the recipe, giving the cookies a unique texture that’s both chewy and tender. If you want to enhance the texture and flavor of your cookies, try swapping in bread flour—it’s a simple change that’ll take your cookies to the next level!

Let’s Talk Kitchen Tools!

I love using different tools in the kitchen to make cooking and baking easier and more enjoyable. Pampered Chef offers a variety of baking tools that would make making these chewy chocolate chip cookies easier and more fun. Here are a few that would help streamline the process:

  • Deluxe Stand Mixer $399 (affiliate link) – Perfect for mixing cookie dough with ease. It handles the toughest doughs and mixes quickly and evenly, ensuring that your ingredients are perfectly combined. You can even use it to knead bread dough when you’re ready to experiment with sourdough!
  • Classic Batter Bowl $25 (affiliate link) – This sturdy, microwave-safe bowl has a spout for easy pouring and is perfect for mixing your cookie dough. It pairs perfectly with your electric mixer and ensures you can smoothly transfer your dough without any mess.
  • Cookie Scoop $22 (affiliate link) – This tool helps you create uniform cookie dough balls, ensuring evenly sized cookies that bake consistently. The scoop helps prevent mess and makes portioning much easier than using spoons.
  • Baking Stone $45 (affiliate link) – A Pampered Chef baking stone helps distribute heat evenly for perfectly baked cookies with a crisp exterior and soft, chewy interior.
  • Silicone Baking Mat $33 (affiliate link)– A reusable, non-stick surface that eliminates the need for parchment paper. This mat ensures your cookies bake evenly without sticking and is easy to clean afterward.
  • Cooling Rack $47 (affiliate link) – Once your cookies are baked, a cooling rack allows air to circulate around them, preventing sogginess and helping them cool faster without losing their perfect texture.
  • Mix ‘N Scraper $18 (affiliate link) – Great for scraping down your mixing bowls, this flexible tool ensures you get every last bit of dough into your cookies without wasting any.
